Game Intro
Level Zero: Extraction combines the tension of asymmetrical survival games with high-stakes encounters in the “extraction shooter” genre. Players take on the role of elite mercenaries venturing into some of the most dangerous environments on and off the planet. Search for valuable items, fend off rival mercenaries, and most importantly, survive long enough to reach extraction points amidst deadly hazards at every turn.
Challenge
DogHowlGames required an extensive testing strategy for Level Zero: Extraction to ensure a seamless experience for players in its multiplayer co-op mode. The game needed testing of its gameplay mechanics and collection of player feedback to refine the mechanics, given the complexity of the cooperative and competitive dynamics.
Key goals included
We conducted over 10 rounds of playtesting sessions, ranging from 2 to 8 hours in length, with participant groups ranging from 20 to 150 players. The goal was to simulate diverse player interactions and uncover any issues affecting the game’s core mechanics. Our approach focused on:
Conducting rigorous co-op gameplay tests, highlighting any glitches, imbalances, or malfunctions that could disrupt the player experience.
Gathering extensive feedback from participants regarding the game’s mechanics, such as item extraction, combat dynamics, and survival strategies.
Testing the game with varied group sizes to ensure that gameplay remains stable and enjoyable with both small and large teams.
Multiple gameplay bugs were identified and reported, including issues with weapon accuracy, extraction point malfunctions, and team communication glitches in the co-op mode. These were addressed and fixed in subsequent patches.
Feedback from players led to several important adjustments to the game’s mechanics. This included rebalancing combat interactions between mercenaries and refining the extraction process for a more immersive experience.
The game’s co-op mode was tested successfully under various player loads, ensuring that the game’s performance remained stable, even during larger sessions with 150 players.
